One space in my home I have barely touched is my master bedroom, and most people would agree that they have been the same within their own homes. We focus on kids rooms, guest areas, places we live and function the majority of our days. And we neglect our own personal sanctuaries to the very end of our to do list every time. As I’m typing this, I’m looking up at a popcorn ceiling, down at stained, 40 year old carpet, and at all the mismatched pieces filling my room. Although I have a laundry list of projects to tackle in 2026, I’ve decided that I’m going to start the year here. In my master bathroom, creating something beautiful with a tight budget. This isn’t a total overhaul. This isn’t my final dream for this space. This is to bring joy to the spot where I start and finish every single day. So today marks my Master Bathroom Refresh where I’m going to upgrade my current floor plan and finally do something that is just for me.
I’m wanting to share how to do simple projects to enhance your space without spending a fortune. Small upgrades to beautify what you have. I’m not demoing any walls, I’m not changing the plumbing. This is going to be aesthetic upgrades from start to finish. Truly projects everyone can do.

First up, I’m going to take my existing vanity and remove all doors, drawer fronts, and false fronts and cut new faces out of plywood. I have a great idea to make an inexpensive…but very expensive-looking…trim to really make them pop in a stunning traditional way. And out with the paint. This vanity is going to be a rich, walnut-color with the prettiest age brass pulls.

This carpet has got to go in this space (well…everywhere, but baby steps), and it’s going to be replaced with hexagon shaped tiles on the floor while the walls will be adorned with beautiful floral wallpaper and trim to match the soft sages on the paper.
Storage always tends to be an issue in this bathroom so I’m going to include a Billy bookcase on the opposite wall to finally give me a linen closet, storage for my extra toiletries, and a way to house my makeup and accessories without sitting out for all to see. I want to paint this to match my trim color or I may take it and offset the color with something contrasting within the wallpaper to brighten the space up, yet keep it cohesive.

Finally, I want to upgrade the lighting and mirrors in this space and tie everything together with the aged brass and pretty glass.
I have a budget in mind to keep within and make this project something for anyone. DIYs, aesthetic upgrades and sensible design choices are going to take this bland, 40 year old bathroom finally come alive!
