Easy Wall Planters - Using Command Hooks!! ⋆ Growing Up Kemper

I love doing DIY. I love using power tools. I love building and creating, planning and inspiring. But, ya know, sometimes we don’t need to bust out big-time tools to make something of our own. DIY can be as simple as a day project and it can be as easy as using just Command hooks! Yes, I love doing something big, but sometimes accomplishing one thing and transforming a space in just a day is a welcome reprieve. And Command hooks?! Now that’s a DIY that I think we can ALL get behind!

I’ve spent so much time and energy on our guest room murphy bed and built-ins install lately that I found myself glued to my computer, on my phone and stressing about such a large project.

I needed to look up a little, get outside, and create something a little more simple. A little less time-consuming. And something that takes me out in nature to enjoy what we have!

I had a wall on my back deck that remained bare for years and years. After we had our house painted in 2020 and went with a crisp white, the wall became much more NOTICEABLY bare. I put up extra strong Command hooks along that wall during the summer to hold towels after the kids got out of the pool and swim trunks to dry off once they got out. I didn’t think it would hold much more than one summer, but I’ll tell you, we went on 3 years and they hadn’t budged a bit. It was a system that worked so well for us in the summer and we all loved the usefulness of it.

But, it wasn’t all that pretty anymore. Those white hooks that seamlessly flowed with the white painted house were beginning to yellow quite a bit. It was dingy and dirty and I wanted a little refresh. A little color. A little life.

**But let me tell you, I will be putting up new hooks (or I’ll just paint the old ones) in a more conspicuous spot on our back deck because it really has been a game changer!! Super convenient and a perfect place to keep swim stuff all organized all summer long!**

I found these beautiful plastic planters from Amazon that look like dark charcoal concrete planters. The color is absolutely beautiful. Medium dark charcoal with small white flecks all over. Very cement-esque, without the weight of it.

Since these are lightweight, I purchased medium hold wire hook Command hooks. Each of the hooks hold 2 pounds of weight, and since the pots have two holes at top, I felt that these hooks would suffice to hold it easily. These do come in varying sizes and weight limits so you can purchase accordingly. If you would like a stronger hold, you can purchase these large ones from Amazon.

I hung these in pairs on top of each other, planted some pretty Calibrachoa that will grow down the front of the pots and sprout gorgeous purple blooms, and moved in some of our pots from around the back deck. Wa-la! Now we have a beautiful, natural spot in our back deck that highlights the beautiful color instead of having a whitewashed area right outside of our door.

Total Time: 20 minutes (including taking down old hook and planting flowers in the pots)

Now THIS is what we can ALL manage!
