Holiday Staircase Garland ⋆ Growing Up Kemper

Some of my Christmas decorations tend to be very subtle and simple. I don’t go over the top with my tree decorations or my holiday party table settings. I throw in plenty of twinkle, a reasonable amount of shine, and I leave them be. No bulk and all the extra decorations.

Other areas of my home, however, I go big! I go dramatic and I use the philosophy of ‘more is more.’ And that, my friends, is exactly what I love to do with my garlands. More is more when it comes to greenery and this year’s holiday staircase garland did not disappoint! I found two beautiful garlands that brought in a whole assortment of differing greens and textures that came together to make one standout garland down my main stairs this year.

When my very favorite Kirkland’s Norfolk Pine garland sold out in early November this year, I didn’t have enough to use on my stairs. I would need 4 of them to make it down both railings and I was short. So I went on a hunt to find a beautiful garland that had the dangle of the Norfolk Pine but also gave me more fullness with other types of greens. When I came across Joann Fabrics 108″ Pinecone and Pine Garland, I jumped on Instagram stories to share is ASAP. I knew so many of you were in the same boat with searching for a great garland at a reasonable price. That garland was all that and more…and marked down to $29.99, it is a steal!!

I used 4 total Pinecone and Pine garlands as my base garland on the stairs. To fasten it, I used these Self-Gripping Cable Ties I found on Amazon to not only secure my garland well, but also to protect my staircase that I worked so hard on this year! They do the trick of securing my garland, protect my hand rail, AND come in a whole assortment of colors to match your railing color!

To add to my base garland, I used 2 Long Needle Pine with Artificial Juniper Garland from Target. It’s currently sold out online, but check your local stores because I’ve heard they are still in stock in some stores. I used landscaping snippers to cut these garlands in half to use it along the railing and then the second piece down the newel post. I wanted bulk throughout my garland and not only in one section.

Finally, I added in a few sprigs of 22in Pine & Pinecone Bush from Joann Fabrics to fill in any sparse areas that needed more of a dangling pine. These buses are priced down to $5 each right now (What?!) and I was able to snip them apart and use them throughout my garland. I used 3 total to fill in any gaps I needed filled.

To cover my cable ties and add a little softness and color to my garland, I wrapped a silver 1″ velvet ribbon in two places along each railing, and then added multiple ribbon colors at the newel post. These colors were all used throughout my house on my fireplace mantel, bows on my main Christmas tree, and hanging my mini wreaths on my kitchen chairs. Amazon’s velvet ribbon comes in SO MANY colors and ships quickly! I used a cream, silver, dusty rose, and white velvet.

Finally, I tied up a set of gold bells to my newel post using the silver velvet to add a touch that I’ve used throughout my home. It’s a great way to add shine and texture to your garland!

More is more is more when it comes to this holiday staircase garland and it brings such warmth and dimension to an area right when you walk into my home. I love how this turned out and how it ties in so many decorations that I’ve used this year.
